Review of Hebrew Courses - Sponsored by:

Some people collect stamps or license plates; I have been collecting and writing Hebrew courses for a few years. As of this time, I cant say that Ive studied them all. But I have reviewed them, listened to the tapes of all the short courses, and maybe this will help you (and save you time and money) in your decisions and investment to study Hebrew further.
4) Primers - teach only to read the basic Aleph-Bet (alphabet/phonetics)

1) Study Courses for Computers
Note: Most all Hebrew courses require the CD/ROM to be inserted when running.
"Home With Hebrew" - Product Features - Multimedia Windows Hebrew Tutor Program teaches beginners to read and pronounce Hebrew language, and to recognize the most common Hebrew words used in Bible and Synagogue. FREE download available. Focuses mainly on phonetics, reading skills, and vocabulary. Includes several fun and challenging games and even shows you how to read Hebrew without the vowel dots. Runs on PC/Windows only. Includes over 800 instructional screens and 2500 sound files. This program is probably the most "Jewish" of all Hebrew programs on the market. Available in my online Hebrew Store.
"Hebrew World - A multimedia course for the very beginner" - Selected chapters of talking Bible, Reading, Writing, Speaking, Calendars, names, Scenes, Speaking Clock, Numbers, Tutorials, Testing. Israeli Hebrew Narration with superb sound quality. Runs on both PC and Macintosh.
Neal's Comments: This program was written by my friend Dr. Danny Ben Gigi, formerly from Israel and former head of Hebrew programs at Arizona State University. This program is entertaining and has beautiful and dazzling graphics. It covers many of the same topics as "At Home with Hebrew". The graphics are often very entertaining - but can also slow you down and at some times be frustrating. I think "At Home with Hebrew" has a more consistent "user interface" (i.e. my buttons are always on the same place on every page). In "Hebrew World", the buttons tends to move around or act differently from screen to screen. However, this program runs directly from your CD/ROM and no installation is required! Available in my online Hebrew Store.
The Hebrew Speaktionary $39.95 - Computer Multimedia Program - Over 1800 files of sounds, pictures, and videos - teaches words relating to art, colors, appliances, electrical stuff, clothing, people, science, technology, Judaica, children, shapes, music, computer, jewelry, cosmetics, home, nature, animals, business, office, languages, and more! (Also by Danny Ben Gigi, creator of Hebrew World). Available in my online Hebrew Store.
Rosetta Stone - Fairfield Languages has created a great set of language tutorials for about 20 languages of the world, and Hebrew is one of them. Thus, the Hebrew tutorial is not unique to Israel or Judaism, but nevertheless it is EXCELLENT if you are an intuitive learner. This program does NOT teach the Hebrew alphabet, but does display un-vocalized Hebrew words (no vowel dots) in Hebrew letters. You learn by seeing four pictures at a time. The pronunciation is excellent. Four example, the first screen shows you four things: man, women, dog, cat. You can repeat as necessary. The second screen will teach you the words for a boy, a girl, a ball, and an airplane. Then a following screen will have something like "the boy and the dog", "the man and the woman", "the man and the boy", Yet another will teach you: "the boy in the plane", "the boy under the plane", "the boy on the plane", etc... Each Lesson includes about 40 pictures. You can get the Exploring Hebrew which has just 20 lessons (about $39.95), or the entire Hebrew course (95 Lessons for approximately $350). Available in my online Hebrew Store.
Rosetta Stone - NOTE 1: The downside is that if you are an analytical learner, and not intuitive, you may not like this program. For example, on screen 1 when it shows you "man, woman, dog, cat", you have to discern the English meaning of the words. The program will audible pronounce the word "ish" over the picture of the man, but it does not tell you that the English word is "man". On a few screens, this can tricky.
Rosetta Stone - NOTE 2: As you progress, I believe this program really helps you to think in Hebrew. When you see a picture, your mind tends to say the Hebrew words. There are 4 different quiz modes available.
Parsons Technology - Hebrew Tutor - You'll move at your own pace through this engaging, interactive sight-and-sound tutorial. Grammar lessons and proven study tools build naturally on your skills, taking you through the equivalent of an entire first-year course.
Neal's Comments on Parsons: Includes voice - but NOT an Israeli accent. Could be a great companion product or follow-up for "At Home With Hebrew". Let "At Home With Hebrew" teach you read printed, cursive, block style, and even Rashi font and to get comfortable with the alphabet and the language. Then proceed with Parsons "Hebrew Tutor," which contains a lot more grammar and exercises/drills.

2) Study Courses that come with Audio Tapes

The Pimsleur System - Speak, Read, and Think Essential Hebrew - this is the course you might see in an airline magazine, I highly recommend this course. It consists of 16 audio tapes and a very small book. Strengths: Modern Hebrew Conversation and pronunciation, perfect for learning in your car or while jogging without needing the book nearby (the book is almost unnecessary). Weaknesses: Teaching you how to read phonetically. Practicality: Youll be able to order a cup of coffee and ask for more chicken, or tell a fellow passenger that you are cold, and to please close the window, but dont expect to understand everything the Israeli waiter or bus driver says to you. $295. Available in my online Hebrew Store. Many more details about the Pimsleur system available from a link there. |

Israeli Hebrew for Speakers of English - is a series of Hebrew language textbooks designed by a group of linguists and Hebrew instructors at the University of Illinois. The series is designed with the following goals in mind: Hebrew as the language is really spoken in Israel today Israeli culture Gradual and highly controlled introduction of grammatical structures Very extensive practice material Reading passages with highly controlled vocabulary Very clear summaries of grammar and vocabulary at the end of each chapter Material suitable for college, adults and high schools. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this course. It is extremely well paced. It exercises the use of each new word (which is properly introduced) and does not throw in strange new words as you go. It teaches you to read without the vowel dots. As new words are introduced, they are dotted, but the vowel markings slowly disappear as the lessons continue - and the amazing thing is you really don't miss them. The series, published by Duben Books, consists a workbook ($7) that introduces the Hebrew alphabet and then three textbooks (approx $21 each). The books are used at major universities around the country as well as in high schools and adult education programs. Tapes are available from the Language Learning Laboratory, University of Illinois (approx. $50 each for volume). |

FSI (Foreign Service Institute) - 552 large page book and 24 audio-tapes, 40 lessons, very thorough, maybe too overwhelming for the beginner. This is supposedly the course that U.S. government officials would use to learn Hebrew for "minimal professional competence." Full course available from "Audio Forum at http://agoralang.com/audioforum.html" or directly from the U.S. Government Printing Office (Superintendent of Documents, Washington DC). Approx $255 According to a file downloaded form http://www.fedworld.gov/ntis/prs/pr1002.htm The complete course is 35 audio tapes and $293. Available from the National Technical Information Service's National Audiovisual Center (part of the U.S. Department of Commerce). Phone 703-487-4650 |

Hugo: Hebrew in Three Months (Hugos Language Books Limited, in USA distributed by Hunter Publishing) - includes 4 cassette tapes and a 211 page course book, 15 lessons. Looks like was originally $40 with four tapes, but new packaging may just have one cassette tape. This course and Everyday Hebrew are very similar, and are the typical courses for people travelling to Israel. They go beyond simple phrases and do teach a fair amount of grammar and usually have one to three dialogs per lesson. They teach modern, not Biblical Hebrew, but much of what you learn is applicable in both. |

3) Mainly Books - Study Courses that come without Audio Tapes (although some have tapes optionally available):

Biblical Hebrew, Step by Step, Vol 1 (Mansoor, Menahem) 40 Lessons, 254 pages An EXCELLENT course. I highly recommend this book for self study or a synagogue class. Each chapter contains small digestible chunks. It would make a great first year course, doing one chapter a week. Volume II is an excellent follow-up.

Biblical Hebrew, A Text and Workbook, (Yale Language Series) Kittel, Hoffer, & Wright, Yale University Press, New Haven, 1989. 55 Lessons, 429 large pages, hardcover. Approx $40. Looks like a very thorough course. The book is workbook style so you actually write in it. Seems a little overwhelming for a beginner. Would probably a good synagogue course if you have a knowledgeable teacher. Could be a good self-study course for the serious student, but not for the faint of heart. |

Ha-Yesod (means "the foundation") - 75 lessons, each 3-4 pages. Covers a lot of good material and grammar, but very few exercises in each chapter. Beginning students need a lot of exercises! I'm thinking about using this book as the text for an online web class beginning later in 1999. Students will be able to register for the class for approximately $10/month. If you want to be on the list for future info, please send email to: HebrewClass@HebrewResources.com See information about my Online Class. |

4) Primers - teach only to read the Aleph Bet
Shaar Khariah - Part 1 - by Sol Scharfstein, Ktav Publishing House, 1956. 128 pages. Introduces letters and vowels dots one or two at a time. Includes a few sample dialogs and stories. Strengths: Many exercises with each letter. Includes blessings at the end. Weakness: Doesnt indicate non-sense syllable used for practicing reading from real Hebrew words. There is very little commentary on how to use the book, but is none-the-less fairly self-explanatory.
The Hebrew Primer by Ruby Stauss, Behrman House, Inc, NY 1984. Almost no English and NO commentary on how to use. However, this book is extremely colorful and well illustrated. Some pages are worksheets for practicing writing letters or words. This would be the perfect primer to teach children by a parent with a basic working knowledge of Hebrew. Includes a few reading exercises toward the end.
Learn Hebrew Today - Alef-Bet for Adults - by Paul Michael Yedwab - UAHC Press, NY, 1992. 61 large pages. Teaches the letters and vowels in the order they appear in the kiddush over the fruit of the vine and the bread. Includes 29 blessings and a few other practice readings. As the title implies, good for adults. Is very brief, but to the point. Could possibly use more exercises. Seems to use real Hebrew words in all exercises, and not non-sense syllables like other primers (but this results in less exercises).

Hebrew Picture Word Book - Learn over 500 Common Used Words Through Pictures - Ages 9-12 -
|
AMAZON.COM. Approx $4 |
|
Renyi Picture Dictionary - Editions Renyi Inc, Toronto, Ontario, Canada 1992. Includes 3336 words (from Abacus to Zucchini), each with a small, colorful illustration. There are 20 cute illustrations per page, approximately 175 pages (large hardcover). The vocalized Hebrew word is above each picture, with the English word below. It assumes you know how to pronounce the Hebrew (no transliterations). It is presented alphabetically based on the English alphabet, but there is a Hebrew to picture number cross-reference in the back. This would be great for adults teaching vocabulary to children. This is not a study course, but more of a fun dictionary/reference book.
